Two cookies. Each does a job you'd notice if it stopped. That's the whole policy - the rest of this page is just showing our working.
Why there's no cookie banner
Because we've nothing to ask you about. Consent banners exist because sites want to track you and legally have to ask first. We don't track you, so there's nothing to ask, so there's no banner. You're welcome.
The cookies
cg_adultStrictly necessaryLasts 1 yearRemembers that you confirmed you are 18 or over, so the age gate stops asking.
Without it you'd get the 18+ interstitial on every single page. It holds one character - a 1. There's no identity in it and it can't be linked to you.
cg_sessionStrictly necessaryLasts 30 days, or until you log outKeeps you logged in to your advertiser account.
Only set if you have an account and log in. It holds a random token - not your email, not your name, nothing readable. Log out and it is deleted and the session is destroyed on our side too.
Both are set with HttpOnly (JavaScript can't read them, so a script injected into a page can't steal your session), Secure (they only travel over HTTPS), and SameSite=Lax (another site can't make your browser send them). They're first-party - set by privateencounters.co.nz and readable by nobody else.
What we don't set
No Google Analytics. No analytics product at all.
No Meta pixel, no TikTok pixel, no advertising tags of any kind. We do not advertise on platforms that would not have us anyway.
No third-party cookies. Nothing on this site is loaded from an ad network or a tracking company.
No session recorders - nothing watching your mouse, your scrolling, or your typing.
No cross-site tracking, no fingerprinting, no "anonymous" identifier that follows you around.
No embedded YouTube, no social widgets, no comment platform. Those are cookies wearing a disguise.
This isn't restraint, it's the point. A tracker on a site like this one is a record that you were on a site like this one, sitting on someone else's server, waiting to be breached, subpoenaed, or sold. The safest place for that record is nowhere.
How we count things instead
Advertisers want to know how their listing is doing, which is fair - they're paying for it. So we count views and contact taps in our own database, as a number on the listing. One counter goes up. Nothing is written about you, nothing follows you to the next page, and no cookie is involved.
Cloudflare, who host us, keep their own edge logs for security and for keeping the site up - that's how any website on earth works. We don't get a per-person view of it and we don't use it to build profiles.
Getting rid of them
Both are yours to delete, any time, from your browser settings - it's usually under Privacy, then something like "clear browsing data" or "cookies and site data". Nothing here breaks if you do. You'll just see the age gate again, and you'll be logged out.
You can also block cookies for this site entirely. The site still works - you'll answer the age gate every page, and you won't be able to stay logged in, because staying logged in is what the cookie is.
Sharing a device?
Worth knowing: cookies aren't the only trail a browser keeps. Your history, your autocomplete and your cache are all more revealing than anything we set. On a shared or family device, use a private window - it throws all of it away when you close it. We'd rather tell you that than have you assume our cookie policy is protecting you from your own browser.
If this changes
If we ever add a cookie, it gets added to the table on this page before it ships, not after. And if we ever add one that isn't strictly necessary, we'll ask you first - with a real choice, where "no" is as easy to click as "yes", and where the site works the same either way. That's a commitment, not an aspiration.
